Using The Article “a”

We use “a” before non-specific, singular nouns that start with a consonant sound.

Using The Article “an”

We use “an” before non-specific, singular nouns that start with a vowel sound.

  • I have an e-mail.
  • I am an engineer.
  • He is an honest person.
  • She is an excellent student.

When Not To Use An Article

We do not use an article before plural or uncountable nouns.

  • I have money.
  • She loves dogs.
  • She has three cats.
  • They have two big apples.
