Target Language

To tell the exact hour, use o’clock.

  • 05:00 – It’s five o’clock.
  • 08:00 – It’s eight o’clock.
  • 12:00 – It’s twelve o’clock.

To tell minutes after an hour use past.

  • 02:05 – It’s five past two. / It’s two oh five.
  • 08:30 – It’s half past eight. / It’s eight thirty.
  • 10:15 – It’s a quarter past ten. / It’s ten fifteen.

To tell minutes before an hour use to

  • 03:55 – It’s five to four. / It’s three fifty-five.
  • 09:50 – It’s ten to ten. / It’s nine fifty.
  • 07:45 – It’s a quarter to eight / It’s seven forty-five.

A quarter = 15 minutes

Sometimes, we use words to represent time

  • 12:00 – noon / midday
  • 00:00 – midnight

In the 12-hour clock, we use AM and PM

  • 08:00 = 8:00am
  • 13:00 = 01:00pm
  • 16:00 = 04:00pm

AM = ante meridiem or “before midday”
PM = post meridiem or “after midday”

When it is almost or a little after, use about.

  • 05:19 – It’s about five twenty
  • 03:32 – It’s about three thirty
