Somethings That Are Not Culturally Acceptable Today

Teacher’s Punishment

We are talking about how teachers used to discipline misbehaving children in the past. Punishing children with the physical act of spanking, on the other hand, used to be pretty normal, but not anymore. In fact, teachers even did this, sometimes with a paddle. Yeah, we find this so hard to think about, too. The concept behind spanking, of course, is to make children fall in line and start behaving, but studies have found that it actually has the opposite effect and it more likely to increase the aggressive behavior in a child both to their parents and to other children at school. Learned behavior is learned behavior. These days spanking is considered physical abuse, and if people were to see or it or hear about it they might be likely to say something or even report a parent to child protective services. It certainly is not happening at school.

Bullying

Bullying has always existed but it used to be pretty standard and even was seen as a rite of passage in some cases. Yeah, we know. Kids just had to figure out how to fend for themselves. Watch any older movie or TV about kids or families and anytime there is a bullying situation the parents encourage the kids to figure it out. Not so much anymore. These days bullying is seen as like the biggest no-no and it is not tolerated in schools when kids are turned in. Of course, it’s also become a little more complicated with the internet and cell phones, since people can be bullied quickly and anonymously in front of large audiences whereas in the past it was more like someone following you around and harassing you to your face which might have been a little easier to deal with it. Bullying is still common, but now people do stuff about it. There are even apps for kids to use who are afraid of bullies and need to find a safe spot to eat lunch with other people who don’t want to get bullied.

Assuming Everyone Eats The Same Thing

Back in the day, people had way less food allergies then they do now, and people weren’t picky eaters. But these days, there are so many different kinds of dietary restrictions and needs that we have to attend to. If you’re going to throw a party of some sort, it would almost be dangerous to serve food without letting people know what the ingredients are, since so many people have ingredients that they just won’t or can’t touch. Like imagine not having a gluten-free option, people might seriously revolt or something. We used to just eat what we were given and serve single meals to guests, but now there is a lot more customization and information about what we’re putting into our bodies, so you can’t just assume that everyone is on the same page. Some airlines even don’t hand out peanuts anymore because so many people are allergic to peanuts, and that used to be the industry standard. It’s classic, peanuts on the plane. But things change, and now being careful about other people’s health is more on our minds than ever before.
