Feeling a bit miserable at the moment? (The weather will do that…)

Need a bit of a morale boost?

Don’t worry – I’ve got your back.

I’ve pulled together 30 of my favorite famous film quotes to motivate, inspire and just generally cheer you up, this week!

Seriously though, we can learn some real-life lessons from the silver screen…

  • Lesson 1: Life is too short…
Use your time wisely. You don’t want to wake up one day and realise you’ve wasted too much on being unhappy, stressed and/or bored.

1. “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.” Gandalf, Lord of the Rings

2. “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”  Ferris, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

3. “I don’t want to survive. I want to live.” The Captain, Wall-E

4. “Every man dies but not every man really lives.” William Wallace, Braveheart

5. “The brave may not live forever, but the cautious do not live at all.” Prince of Genovia, The Princess Diaries.

6. “It’s not about the paycheck, it’s about respect, it’s about looking in the mirror and knowing that you’ve done something valuable with your day.” Dave Kovic, Dave

7. “Worrying is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do but it doesn’t get you anywhere.” Van Wilder, Van Wilder: Party Liaison

8. “Remember those posters that said, ‘Today is the first day of the rest of your life?’ Well, that’s true of every day but one…the day you die.” Lester Burnham, American Beauty

  • Lesson 2: Just keep swimming!
Life can also be bloomin’ tough. But if you surround yourself with good people and maintain a positive, motivated attitude, you’ll get through it.

9. “The flower that blooms in adversity is the rarest and beautiful of all” The Emperor, Mulan

10. “There’s no such thing as too far. Do you understand? You push everything as far as you can. You push and you push and you push until it starts pushing back. And then you push some goddamn more.” Walter Abrams, Two For The Money

11. “Oh yes, the past can hurt. But you can either run from it, or learn from it.” Rafiki, from The Lion King

12. “I have to believe that when things are bad I can change them.” Jim Braddock, Cinderella Man

13. “It ain’t how hard you can hit. It’s how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. It’s how much you can take, and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done.” Rocky, Rocky Balboa

14. “I know what I have to do now. I’ve got to keep breathing because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?” Chuck, Castaway

15. “Two little mice fell in a bucket of cream. The first mouse quickly gave up and drowned. The second mouse, wouldn’t quit. He struggled so hard that eventually he churned that cream into butter and crawled out.” Frank Abagnale Sr, Catch Me If You Can

16. “Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming. What do we do? We swim, swim.” Dory, Finding Nemo

  • Lesson 3: Stop worrying about everyone else.
We all need to stop relating our own success and happiness, to other people.

Live your life for you.

17.“Why are you trying so hard to fit in when you were born to stand out?” Ian, What a Girl Wants

18. “You cannot live your life to please others. The choice must be yours.” The White Queen, Alice in Wonderland

19. “Sometimes it’s the very people who no one imagines anything of who do the things no one can imagine.” Christopher Morcom, The Imitation Game

20. “Don’t ever let somebody tell you you can’t do something, not even me. Alright? You dream, you gotta protect it. People can’t do something themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want something, go get it. Period.” Chris Gardner, The Pursuit of Happyness

Target Language

Reported Speech

We use the Reported Speech to report what other people said or asked. The verbs say, tell, explain, promise and ask are often used to report speech.

  • They told me I would get my money back.
  • I haven’t heard from Jerry in quite a while. I hope everything is fine, he said he would call when he got home.
  • What she did was not right, but she promised never to do it again.
  • The officer explained that I was driving above the speed limit of the road.

Pay attention that we often move the verb tense back when we report what someone said. Some time expressions also need to be changed.

  • You are driving above the speed limit of the road, ma’am.
  • The officer explained that I was driving above the speed limit of the road.
  • I will call you tomorrow.
  • He said he would call me the next day.

When we report a question, we switch the word order of the sentence as if it were a positive statement, and don’t use a question mark.

  • How much are these shoes?
  • The customer asked how much the shoes were.
  • Have you been arrested before?
  • The officer asked if I had been arrested before.
